My favorites are probably Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, but since they aren't really Broadway's in their origin, I definitely have to go with Wicked. That's the best show I've seen in years. And why? Tough question! I think the original cast was excellent and they've done amazing casting (for the most part) ever since. I think it's a really creative twist on a classic story, the music is addictive (my wife's best friend who's never been exposed to any theater tends to start belting out Popular without warning), and it's nice to have a show that the whole family can see and enjoy. My opinion.

I loved Wicked also. What makes Wicked such a great musical is that it has appeal to all ages, the songs stick in your head and then you have the costume and sets and flying effects to really make it a total package.
As far as current productions, I think "The Drowsy Chaperone" is also amazing, but I do think it doesn't have as widespread appeal.
The Lion King is also amazing as far as sets/effects and music. I think it could run longer than Cats, and make more money too!
For older musicals, I think West Side Story was one of the best.

Having musical background and regularly supporting the Arts and going to the theater, in my opinion, here are the top 5:
1. Phantom of the Opera
2. Les Miserables
3. The King and I
4. Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
5. Cats
The music / scores from these are simply fantastic and timeless. To me, that's the judge of a great musical - if it continues to speak to people throughout the ages.

Cats (and Evita was good too)
The music in Cats, the song lyrics, costumes, the sets, and the way the actors portray the cats, are all fabulous.
We saw it in Toronto - which is a beautiful city, and the people are wonderful; but never ask a Canadian how far a place may be, as they'll say, "Oh, that's just walking distance!"
So taking their advice we started out - but let me tell you we were one worn out group when we got there. It wasn't until later that we learned that to a Canadian any place up to 20 miles is "walking distance!"

I liked Evita. I saw it live with Patty Lupone in the title role and I loved it. The music perfectly fits the role and it is a wonderful vehicle for a beautiful stage voice. (Madonna could not do it justice.) I also loved Evita, who was a weird historic persona in her own right (Grade B movie star turned saint) as the tragic heroine who lets her people down by dying of cancer.

as an 'older' person, Id have to say my favorite Broadway musical is "Guys and Dolls" have loved it for years....you can take almost any of the songs from this show out of context and they would still be beautiful; Frank Loesser was a great songwriter....of course the storyline is silly, what musicals' isn't? but Guys and Dolls is my number one favorite...

No real offense but BEST is relative.
In a financial sense, certainly there have been major successes, as well as failures.
In the sense of being accepted, enjoyed, remembered, many were/are successful in that context and never make it to the "Black" in a profit sense.

Some that ran a VERY long time:
My Fair Lady
Fiddler on the Roof
Oklahoma!
Man of La Mancha
Even if you're a lot younger than I am, I'll bet you'd recognize a lot of those songs.

Sweeney Todd (for it's dark comedy and tragedy, and it's immensely complex and well-crafted score. So powerful...)
Chicago (for sheer toe-tappin', vaudeville goodness!)
Little Shop of Horrors (again for it's dark humor and the juxtaposition of the horrors of the plot with the upbeat, du-wop happiness of the music. Brilliant and hilarious!)

My favorite is Wicked because it is inspiring! It got me back into my love for theater and more into my love for singing and belting out my favorite songs from Wicked! Elphaba is actually my dream role! I hope I get it some day!
