I would say that traditional Chinese culture recognised the sacredness of all of the natural world. All traditional earth based cultures have recognised the sacredness of life and the natural world and universe. These traditional cultures recognised the importance of remaining in harmony and balance with nature and the need to respect all life.

Traditional Chinese culture was and is deeply aware of the interconnectedness between the movement of the life force within the individual person and that of the celestial bodies. They were and are deeply aware of and understand the delicate balance that exists between the natural world and the human being.

In my opinion,.. traditional Chinese culture would view the sun and moon as holy in the sense that all life is sacred. ... I do not believe they would go so far as to "worship" the sun and moon as "deities",.. but they would honor and recognise these celestial spheres as representing the great forces of YIN and YANG which govern the movement and flow of all life.

Yes, believe it or not most cultures and peoples worship the sun and moon. Why? They know that we need both to live and prosper. The sun warms us and gives us light and the moon gives us the balance. They both are directly need to grow our crops and feed our people.
The top cultures that worship the Moon and Sun as Gods are:

Mayan, Inca, and Aztec cultures
Egyptian culture
Native Americans

These cultures worshiped the Sun and Moon everyday and you can find it in their writings and pictorials. The pyramids were built for this purpose (that is only one reason), and the Native Americans built their villages according to the Sun and Moon. Look at these cultures and you will find smart people who knew the world could not exist without the Sun, the Moon and Mother Earth.
