... we have upper and lowercase letters, but not upper and lower case numbers?

Well, not really. I mean, we need capital letters so we know when a sentence starts or for the title of something. What use would there be for upper case numbers? Anyone for pie?

When printing was done by hand, the single letters were contained in cases. The one above the printers head contained the Capital letters and was known as the Upper Case whilst the Lower Case contained the non-capital letters. The Compositor who was setting up the block for the print used whatever letters he required by reaching up to the Upper Case or Lower Case whichever was required.
The Numbers were kept in a small tray elsewhere..................

They used to be so and they are called Roman Numerals. ie XXX = 30
