Each car has their own "sweet spot". The trick is to learn your car's behavior.
Generally speaking, it's the following steps...
First, pull AHEAD of the space, so your rear wheel is roughly aligned with the rear wheel of the car in front of the space, though you can just pull ahead enough so you're even with the car ahead.
Second, go reverse, and "get the tail into the space". You are aimming for the bumper of the car behind the space. A lot of mistakes are made when they pulled too sharp into the space. Remember, get the tail in, but aim for the front bumper of the car behind.
Third, once aim is achieved, CENTER the wheel. keep backing in until the nose clears the car ahead.
Fourth, turn to get the nose to the curb, as hard as possible, while still going gently in reverse, until the front wheel bump into the curb.
Fifth, if parked on incline, remember to "curb" the wheels in the proper position, and engage parking brakes.
Practice makes perfect.

line up parallel with the car ahead of the empty spot. Use your side mirrors and have them equal with the car beside yours. Put the car in reverse and turn the wheel all the way right, backing the car in. Once your back end is in the spot, crank the wheel in the opposite direction to complete the park. Adjust as needed

best way most new yorkers learned is by lining up your cars mirrors with the car in front of the spot. turn the wheel all the way to the right and SLOWLY reverse. when your right hood corner is aligned with front car's left rear tail light, turn the wheel all the way to the left while slowly reversing, straighten up, even out and your done.
