A second-floor balcony is NOT the safest place to operate ANY grill. So it's safe to assume you seek a grill that's portable, easy to set up, cook with and take back upstairs with you when done.

You're looking for charcoal grills. And the top line name of charcoal grills is Weber: found at any popular name brand hardware store.

Charcoal grills have many benefits: you can use either charcoal OR special wood chunks that can add that yummy "smoky" flavor to your meats.

Such grills don't take long to cool off when you're done and you can easily put away the cooled charcoal remains in a garbage bag. A quick zap of pressure hose water on the grill--and it's clean, ready to be sent back up to you apartment.

As you note here: it's NEVER safe to grill on anyplace else but ground level outdoors.

I would definitely recommend a Weber grill. They are really worth the money.
You may want to check if you are allowed to have a grill first where you live because I know that sometimes they are not allowed on balconies due to the risk of fires and such.

Weber, or if you want something good but a bit cheaper, go with BBQ Grillware. They ranked well on consumer reports.
