My computer has slowed up completely, i continue to get these pop ups saying trojan detected etc and have recently got spywar pop ups saying your computer is at threat.

The thing is I have had this computer for about 4 years and have not updated it with anti spyware.

from looking at other comments i was attracted to ewido anti spyware (free version) will this protect my computer from viruses etc and is it safe to download ??? thank you

Run a full scan, using your anti-virus software. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

AVG has taken over ewido.. both were great comp protection.. and yes spybot.com is a good back up .. sometimes one will catch something the other won't.. just never run 2 virus scans at the sametime.. and always update before a scan.. run a scan at leased every other day.. AVG will stop pop ups.. so often those pop ups will only want your money.. they say free scan, but won't fix the problems, till you pay.. AVG and spybot are free.. no trials.. an AVg is easy on your comp.. by not running a scan, leaves you wide open 4 hackers 2 get in.. you can also delete cookies and temp files and run a defrag, 2 get your comp moving faster..anymore problems, check back in after you ran a scan.. someone will take you a few steps further 2 getting your comp runing faster..

Spybot is about the best (free) adware/spyware remover.

Be careful, adware and spyware are different to virus's and trojans. so you need to make sure that you are also protected from viruses. McAfee or Norton are good (but not free). If the computer is slow, it may be worth cleaning the registry. CC Cleaner is good (and free, although you will be asked for a donation).

Hope it helps

Yes, Ewido (now AVG antispyware) is excellent. However from the description in your question it sounds like you have a more serious problem that even Ewido cannot solve.

Your decription of "spywar pop ups saying your computer is at threat." almost always means only one thing. And that is, your computer has a Smitfraud infection. You will need to use a specialised removal tool such as SmitFraudFix v2.8:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
or
RogueFix:
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
To remove this pest.

Even more Smitfraud info. is here:

Good luck.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
