But I feel decidely unchristmassy, it being pretty much dead now.

The twelve days of Christmas are not the twelve days before Christmas, but are instead the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25 until January 5), which is when the three Wise Men or Magi arrived on the scene. (Source: http://www.cresourcei.org/12days.html This was found via a Yahoo! Search, "twelve days of Christmas")

After doing a search, "twelve days of christmas meaning", I found this link: http://www.appleseeds.org/12_days-christmas.htm
The story with this seems similar to the stories I've heard on the song/tradition of the holiday from other sources in my life.

When my sbilings and I were younger (maybe just my older brother and sister, as I don't remember, but that probably isn't relavant for this story), my parents used to do the Twelve Days of Christmas by giving us (or them) a gift every day until Epiphany. I like the idea of doing something for the Twelve Days of Christmas and will look into doing something for my chid(ren). However, my mother still waits until Epiphany or the day after (I think usually Epiphany Sunday, as she has the afternoon free to do so) to take down her Christmas decorations.

I hope I've been of some help.

We wait, we shop, we angle around for a work day off and we work real hard at tolerating the overmarketing/commercialization of that special one day Christmas holiday. So from the modern, hi-tech, materialistic standpoint: it's WAY past time to take down the light ornaments and put away the fake tree or....as I so lovingly put it: put the dying real tree to it's death.....OUTSIDE.

Chistmas is over.....or is it????

Christmas doesn't necessairly have to be celebrated on the 25th--but the holiday CAN be celebrated daily year round. By merely making it a point EACH DAY to do one small kind favor to someone, you can keep Christmas alive in your heart.

As for those "12 days", that's not only lyrics to a clever Christmas carol, but I assume you inquire about the 12 days of Hannakuah, the Jewish version of Christmas. Any Jewish person can gladly tell you more on this; I'm not Jewish....hey: nobody's perfect, right?

Little Christmas is on January 6th so if you really wanted to stretch your imagination you could say that Christmas is not quite over just yet. In Spain for example the 25th is celebrated but they also give out presents and have a party for Los Reyes, which is the 6th. I guess that counting from the 25th to midnight of the 5th would give you the 12 days that are in the song.

As was posted, day 7. I will prolly keep the season going even a little after that. The fake tree will come down when I return from a little holiday next week.
Besides, for now the after glow of the BIG day is still strong, and there are still a few small gifts to exchange. And after,
Well said, Mr. Wizard, we can carry a little bit of Christmas with us year round. At least I attempt to do so!

Yup, it's Christmas up to the 5th of January.
It's 12 days because it took 12 days to the Three Kings to get to Bethlehem by following the star.

The twelve days of christmas begin on 25th December and end on January 5th! I don't feel like it's christmas anymore though!

I always think Christmas should end the day after Boxing day, it is just no mans land, then New Year. Our tree and cards come down as soon as possible, they always look a little sad after Boxing day.
So in my house Christmas ended sometime last week, Bah Humbug!!
