These are totally different cars!! Neither are that great for the money. The Ford is older and will need some fixing up. You'd be better with a Honda or Toyota of the same year. They're more reliable and hold value better than a Ford.
As for the Porsche, it's expensive and again, there are many, many cars out there that are a better choice for the money. Of course, if you just want a car for the looks and are willing to spend the money for "status," then the Porsche is for you.

"Best" can mean different things to different people. You need to ask yourself if this is going to be purely an investment, or if it is about reliability or, most likely, a combination of both. I personally would look for Porsche's, specifically the 911S, between the years of '71 and '74. The early productions (think late 60's) should probably be avoided for obvious reasons (first gen. bugs) Also forget the late 70's models as I've been told they've had reliability problems most specifically with emissions. All in all, just keep doing the research. I'm sure you will be treating this as an investment. Check ownership history, watch for rust, and as a rule of thumb think early 70's and before - they're holding value, later models aren't.

The Escort rocks, and is one of the more reliable small ford cars....no seriously. You don't need the ego stroke, the time spent worrying about the porsche in the parking lot, the money on car washes, special maintence, stone chips, bad roads, tires. Any idiot can fix a ford if it breaks...... are you going to go under the hood to fix a porsche?
Plus, if the escort gets stuck in snow, you can push it out yourself. new cars depreciate 30% in the first year. I also buy late model vehicles cheap, and sell the 3 years later for nearly the same price, if not a bit more.
I can't believe i spent all this time answering this question. Give me the 10 points !!

Since Ford didn't make a 1.3 Escort in 1985, you have no choice. (They did make a 1.6 liter gas Escort, and a 2.0 liter diesel. But, that's not what you asked about, is it.)
