As a relatively new mom, I am speaking from my experience. (My baby is 11 weeks old.) The best gifts are the items that they will need the most...
1. Diapers - but get some of the bigger sizes. I ended up with more size one diapers than I needed and ended up giving them away to a pregnant friend. So, size two or three would be good gifts.
2. Petroleum Jelly - That's all that you need for baby's bottom. I had my baby at the Cleveland Clinic where they told us that powders, oils and lotions are not needed. They also said that there are cases of health problems related to the powders and oils and that they should not be sold for use on babies.
3. If you want to buy clothes, get bigger sizes. At my baby shower and at his birth, lots of people sent us clothes. I was very grateful, but they are all in the smaller sizes. He grew out of the 0-3 month size in a matter of weeks! At Christmas, we got a ton of 3-6 month sizes, but he's probably going to grow out of them in a couple more weeks. So, anything 9 month and bigger would be better.
4. For the first several months, babies have no interest in toys. Not even a rattle. But you could get some little rattles for later. Just make sure if it makes noise, it's not something that has to be squeezed really hard in order to make noise. I have a couple of those and it's too hard for the baby to squeeze it the right way.
5. Pictures! Moms love pictures of their babies, so you could get a gift certificate for a photo place (Penney's Sears, or something local) for baby to get pictures done at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and one year! They change so much in the first year. Then mom can also have photos to give to baby's grandparents as gifts.
6. Burp cloths - I didn't have enough of these at first. We go through the burp cloths so often that if I didn't have a ton of them, I'd be doing laundry all the time.
7. HELP AROUND THE HOUSE. If mom is still recovering and getting used to having a baby, one of the best gifts is help around the house. Offer to do the laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, or run errands. It was really hard for me to get out of the house for the first two months. I felt like I was literally attached to the baby between breastfeeding, changing, holding, etc.
Skip the blankets. I have so many blankets from gifts that I will never use. I got three hand knitted blankets, 5 quilts, 7 thermal, 20 receiving blankets, 3 fleece blankets... We use some of them, but we have more than we need.
I hope you find these suggestions helpful.

I have a 5 week old baby and I can tell you right now that if someone gave me a gift clothes would be the best. Clothes and Burp Cloths....cause babies go through those FAST. Also, diapers....if you do taht you would want to know the weight of the baby to get the right size. That young would probably need either Newborn Diapers or size 1 diapers. Also what i think is a great gift is Batteries. Cause parents these days are buying all the great electonical stuff and they all need batteries. Like the swings and musical mats and just all of that stuff. Most of those things take D batteries. Sometimes AA or C. Of course you could always think ahead of time and think that in 6 months what will the baby want/need. Might come useful later on and is always night for people to get things like that.....have fun with this and i hope my ideas helps you out.

if the baby is only 2 weeks old- buy a 50 dollar bond, they are usually only 25 and they mature in 7 years to 50 and if they leave it in there till the baby is 18 it will gain interest. They can use it towards college or a car, maybe it doesn't seem like much but if more poeple did it the kid will have a nice sum of money to help when they need a card or books for college.
Much better then some toy they will eventually break or grow out of.

I currently have a 6 month old baby and I can tell you the two items that have been unbelievably useful to me. The first item is the Leachoo pillow. This pillow is quite similar to the Boppy except it has a safety strap that prevents the baby from slipping down. I haven't seen the Leachoo pillow in the stores, but I've seen it offered on-line. The second item I would suggest is a baby gym. Not only has it helped keep my baby entertained, but the gym has also strengthened my baby's muscles. I often receive comments from people saying how strong my baby's legs and hands are. The baby gyms created by the company called Tiny Love are highly recommended by reviewers and by me.

When our friend Rach had her baby it was near to Xmas and none of us knew what to get her for a present. So we set up a bank account with Rach for her baby daughter, every birthday and Christmas we put money in there for her for when she is bigger. We figured that when she was born, how would she know what a present is, and if she would appreciate it?Lol! Also all the family members were innundating Rach with every item of clothing, teddy and baby stuff you could imagine. So we decided cold hard cash is a better option from friends, at least until she can tell us what she wants!

If they have everything the baby needs, then I would buy stuff they will continually need to replenish. I would find out what kind of diapers and wipes they use and buy them. You could get some baby bath stuff( body wash, lotion, ect). You might want to call a head and see what they are using( I love Johnston's Lavender Line). You could even do a little medicine bag filled with infants tylenol, gas drops, diaper rash cream, and you could even buy some infant vapor bath for when baby gets stuffy. These will be greatly appreciated gifts, because you can never have to much. At some point they will need more. I always liked getting those things, because you always need them, and very few people get them for you.

The best present I have ever heard of, might be a little late for you to do. But, it is a gift box, nicely packaged, with newspapers from all over the world (found at local bookstores!) and magazines that are published and printed on the day of the birth. It doesnt seem like much, but later in life, it will be really special!

Honestly, the most surprisingly and best gift would be a HUGE box or bag (depending on your wallet) of diapers. You wouldn't believe how many babies will go through in a week. When both of my kids were born they got tons of cute little newborn outfits that they never even got to wear because we never got to leave the house. The box of diapers from a friend were awesome. Something I'll always remember.

My first son received a really cute piggy bank with some change in it (I think for the noise effect). I thought it was a really nice gift as it was something he could keep for always. In all honesty, it was the only time with all three of my children that anyone was given a piggy bank! I liked the gift so much that I now give piggy banks as baby gifts! Nordstrom has some really cute ones!

A 2 week old baby doesn't really care about toys. I would buy clothes or something with lights. Baby's love to look at lights.
