Depends on the people!!!

Lots were not. My uncle had lots of friends who were African diplomats. My grandfather got along well with people from myriad of backgrounds.

Obviously, in that time, racism was more socially acceptable than it is today but some people still thought it was wrong and stupid.

Then again, Thomas Paine, was FOR liberation of blacks during revolution. He had trouble convincing other founding fathers

Considering the KKK was at it's most powerful then yes they were. I think it's rather like saying it when the civil rights movment was going on, was everyone then a racist? No, but were there racists? Of course! otherwise there wouldn't have been the movement. Look at the link below it has alot of info for you.

What do you mean, people are still very racist today. Not your average American Christian, I'll grant you - but people like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton in the US, the anti-Semites in France, etc.
