Because they came from Hamburg, Germany

Well, it seems hamburgers do indeed originate in Hamburg, Germany. According to Wikipedia, this is a common naming scheme: one could easily conclude that Frankfurters come from Frankfurt, Germany. Indeed they might, or they may have been invented by a person named Johann Georghehner.

As for the ham, words like "cheeseburger" are probably simply "cheese" mixed with "hamburger", and "burger" may come from this. Or it may have happened the other way around: "burger" may have been a simple abbreviation of "hamburger", and "cheeseburger" may come from "cheese" onto "burger". So the word "ham" in the name is probably just coincidence, unless the city of Hamburg is somehow related to ham. (The German word for "ham" seems to be "Schinken".)

the word 'hamburger' are originated from Hamburg in GERMANY. the inhabitants of this city are also known as "Hamburger" in German but as Hamburgians in English. In Germany, local traditional snacks are often named after the place of origin, like the Frankfurter (also known as a hotdog), the Berliner (a type of "doughnut") or (Nürnberger) Bratwurst.
