The horn is a member of the brass family, which includes trumpet, trombone, tuba - but also such instruments as euphonium, flugelhorn and cornet.

The phrase 'direct family' implies that you are being asked about the French horn's predecessors. These would include such instruments as the posthorn and natural trumpet.

English Horn is definant. Anything that ends in Horn is related. Melaphone (used in Marching and Pep Bands) is like an upright version of one. looks like a bulky trumpet!
