MSN (or Microsoft Network) is an Internet service provider and web portal (initially meant to be a parallel net to the Internet) created by Microsoft on August 24, 1995, coinciding with the release of Windows 95. The MSN moniker has since been extended to Microsoft's Hotmail webmail service and the MSN Messenger instant messaging client, as well as other Microsoft-branded websites.

Well mark it's not as dumb of a question as you thought. MSN stands for MicroSoft Network its a separate part of microsoft. But it has many parts, one of which is email with hotmail but they also have their own ISP (Internet Service Provider). So you can actually have the internet through microsoft. Netflix is a part of msn as well as msn instant messenger and many other products and services. So all and all they have a big portion of the internet. So you see that was more of an indepth question that you had thought. Hope this helped, if you have any other questions let me know.

It is a competitor of yahoo's....has free email (hotmail), news, TV listings, groups, etc. along with some 'for pay' premium services. It is owned and run by Microsoft (who created windows 2000 and Internet explorer browser).
It's useful to me for the TV listings which are better than yahoos, but it is sometimes slower and has less offerings overall than yahoo because Microsoft doesn't provide as much staff to support it as yahoo does.
all a matter of choice, some people like the news selection of MSN better than yahoo, but prefer yahoo's groups better than MSN's...over all, yahoo has more 'clientele' than MSN now, but it used to be the other way around.

Microsofts Network, it includes, instant message capabilities, web-mail, search engine and possibly more.
I avoid it, becuase I'm not a fan of Microsoft, however I do use its hotmail service, its one of the few Microsoft technologies that I havn't migrated from yet.
More info on MSN can be found at Wikipedia.
