Because white is traditionally considered a summer, or warm weather color, while darker colors are more appropriate for Fall and winter. It's not a hard and fast rule, just a tradition.

It's funny, but I grew up with this rule even living in FLorida and though no one hardly follows it anymore, its hard for me not to.
Labor day kinda says....summer is over so start those warm fall colors. The rest of the rule is, don't wear white shoes until Esther day!
A funny tradition, but when you put those shoes on, it makes you think alittle!

One of the old fashion rules. Something like always needing to wear a slip under a dress.
I don't see many wearing white shoes in the winter, so I guess the rule still holds, pretty well.

It used to be a fashion rule. It is no longer applicable. http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:WMqwwAwJnnYJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day+white+after+labor+day&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=safari This etiquette is also compared to the Canadian fashion rule of not wearing green after Remembrance day.

Good question! I always thought (as a kid) it was because they'd get dirty....around here, it gets muddy and dirty when it's not summer....but thanks to global warming, we wear white a lot longer now! lol Seriously, it's probably just some archaic etiquette for elitest to make fun of others!

i thinki t started somewhere bc white tends to reflect heat and light. so it's great in the hot months and not so good in colder. now it doesn't matter. although i still think alot of pure white in winter is trashy, i love winter white around the holidays. i think it looks great.

I believe the rule was not to wear white clothes. I felt that it was because one's complexion dulls after not exposed to the summer sun and that white would make it more apparent. Also, for those of us who live with snow, one would get kind of lost out there! Really, some grow tired of seeing all that white. But like every fashion rule, I've broken it. In fact, last winter I bought and wore a white blazer on purpose during winter, with light pink scarf and hat. I looked like a snow bunny. It was cute. Break the rules!

I dont think that is still a rule because now they have the color winter white.
The rule was no white shoes, not no white clothing. White shoes are summer attire, and it is tacky to wear them in summer.

white shoes get visibly dirtier in winter months, you're supposed to wear dark colors, least that's what i was always told
