the Arctic and other northern extremes were not best described by the words 'Eskimo' or even 'Inuit', since these were too specific.

However they didn't give an alternative.

What is the 'correct' term (if there is one)? What do they call themselves? What do anthropologists refer to them as?

Just so you know, I'm not some P.C. killjoy, but if "Eskimo" and "Inuit" are genuinely offensive then I'd like to know.

Eskimos, or Esquimaux, are terms used to refer to people who inhabit the circumpolar region, excluding Scandinavia and most of Russia, but including the easternmost portions of Siberia. There are two main groups of Eskimos: the Inuit in northern Alaska, Canada and Greenland, and the Yupik of western Alaska and the Russian Far East.

I would call them "natural survivalists" because they naturally accept that they are always fighting for survival against the elements that can kill a human being-cold,hypothermia,starvation-don't forget they have to go out and battle the sub zero temperatures every day.Better than those pseudo-survivalists from easier places,who can afford guns with the money from their nice little jobs and can get instructions on how to build a shelter from some army book,and live in hotter places where fruit/veg is much more abundant anyway.

Depends who you ask.

On Canada, on the online poker site, several users call themselves Eskimo. However some people are offended by it.

Inuit is pretty common here. Our government calls them just native people in general.
