The 1/4" headphone to 1/8" line in should work. Make sure you can hear the music on your speakers of your home stereo first. Plug in the 1/4" headphone plug and turn the volume up about 1/3 of the way. Plug in the 1/8" to the line input on your computer. Double click the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. If it's not there, go start > control panel > sounds and audio devices > tick the box for place volume icon in toolbar. Now, after doubleclicking the speaker icon, untick the mute underneath the Line In slider. Adjust the slider and you should hear music from your computer speakers. Next, put the Line In back on mute and then go to Options > Properties > Recording > OK
Tick the box that says Select underneath the Line In slider. Adjust the volume for this and the master. You should be able to record the music now with your favourite software. Adjust the volume on your stereo as needed, and you can also make adjustments to the line in volume until you get it just right with as little noise and distortion as possible. DON'T use the microphone in. It's meant for much lower audio levels than headphone level. Even headphone level is high for line level inputs but if your volume on your stereo isn't turned up high, it should work just fine.
