I have two pygmys ready to give birth soon. They live in a nice shed thats is probably 8x8 that opens up to a good size pen. Can my pgymys stay together and give birth or will the other one try to take the babies or kill them before she has her own???? I know 2 pregnant mares near birth of each other will attempt to steal the other foal if foaled out in the field together. What will pymy's do? I don't have another way to split them up right now. Experts only!!!

The feed store usually has a $35 (approximately) metal barrier that is used for such occasions. It is called a cattle fence, but it is about 4' high and 6' to 8' long. Considering how many uses I found for this piece of barrier, it is a bargain price wise.

I used rubber bungees to temporarily affix mine to separate my mare when foaling.

Be sure to gather your birthing kit full of helpful items. Read above. Have you vet aware of the pending birth so that if there should be any complication during delivery, you can get them out there ASAP. Or have an experienced person ready to come help.

Kiss the babies for me. Nothing more fun or cute than a kid.

Go ahead and separate them. Make sure they are close though because if they get stressed from being apart they could have complication with their kidding. I have had a ton of seasoned mares steal babies even when "the stealer" was open. It's just a natural instinct. But after the kids are a couple days old, healthy, and on their way put them back together and see how they do from there.

definite, she would lose the toddler if she is butted difficult round her abdomen. you easily could separate them till after she has her youngster (yet another 2 months). Then after the toddler is born you will could shop an eye fixed on them once you re-introduce them, in case she assaults the toddler too.
