A Gig is usually a small performance. Many times not alot of people are involved. It may not even take place on a stage. Though, many musicians use the term loosly, to always cover a performance they are about to do.
As for a bootleg, this is an unauthorized copy of an album. Basically an illegal representation. More times you find bootleg copies of hard to find albums or import albums.

A gig is a word used to describe any form of work or engagement. When a band is hired they have a gig. It's also used to mean work of any kind.
Bootleg is something that is made by illegal means. If you make a copy of a CD and sell it, then you just sold a bootleg copy. Liquor that is made at home, including wine, is called bootleg liquor.

It's basically any performance job an artist gets booked for. And a bootleg is a term mainly applied to movies...any copy of a film that is pirated or illegally recorded, like with a video camera in a movie theater.

A gig to a musician is usually a booking in which they will be paid to play. Yes, it could be a concert for a large crowd or it may be a smaller venue, but the musician will play for someone that is paying.
I suppose there are charity gigs also, but most musicians hear money when they hear "gig".

A bootleg is an unofficial release, not by the band. Could still be proffesionally done.
