Pakistan orignated from India due to HATE, which was a product of British Raj. Since the origin Pakistan had fought three war with India(though the undeclared war of terrorisam continues).
The rift was widen not only because of war but the race of becoming super power between USA and former USSR. It continued till the collapse of USSR and the world has to deal with single Super Power USA. It was 7/11 that brought the changes to USA policy and its view towards pakistan.
It was the total lackness on the part of our leadership that they always compared their defence with Pakistan instead of Chaina.
If they were to compare with China, they would be forced to work hard to develop India to that levell. Instead they happilly made money and ruled the country like British, till the collision govt era started.
Development has indeed started and we are leading now in many sectors and now the same people had started comparing India with China. Its matter of time that Pakistan may lose its identity if the same condition prevails there.

At least most people in the US have little knowledge of the area and I suspect the main impression is that when the British got booted out, the Hindu part of the area became India and the Muslim part became Pakistan. Also in modern days, we still see two countries bickering over territory and religion and I think that brings the opinion of the two countries closer together.

It depends on who "people" are. In the US, our global awareness is poor, so when we think of "that part of the world," India and Pakistan can be clumped together. However, if "people" are "people" with some knowledge of the area, they realize that the countries are very different--from economic development to religion.
