i read somewhere that japanese swordplay movies are generally more realistic and, maybe, better, than chinese ones (such as hero, house of flying daggers, the banquet etc) so can anyone suggest some japanese movies for me to watch?

When ever you say Japanese movies it generally means movies made by Akira Kurosawa. When you say Japanese swordplay movies it means 'samurai movies' or 'jedai geki'.
The best of the genre are:
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
Throne of Blood
Ran

These also happen to be some of the greatest movies ever made.
It is important not to confuse them with Hong Kong movies starring Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
