Although colds are viral and therefore, "uncurable," I have found a few things that have truly helped me and my family to suffer less:
Yin Chaio, a Chinese herbal remedy, can be found in some health food stores and Chinese herb shops. It comes in pill form and consists of 6 or 7 herbs. If taken 3 times a day right at the start of a cold, all symptoms just plain go away, but it must still be taken for 3 days in order to work best. It doesn't actually "cure" the cold; it just represses the body's response (so that the body doesn't produce an overabundance of mucous, which makes one miserable).
Airborne, a cold remedy developed by a teacher who was tired of catching her students' colds, seems to help in much the same way. In fact, the several of the active ingredients are the same as the ones in Yin Chaio. Walmart and most pharmacies carry it over the counter. It must also be taken for 3 days. Instead of pills, it comes in tablets similar to Alka-Seltzer, which are disolved in water; then one must drink it. Although it comes in orange flavor, I don't like the taste. It reminds me of drinking carbonated water. But it has worked well for me.
Zicam, which is sold over the counter in most drugstores, is a gel containing zinc, which is put in each nostril with a swab. I don't remember how often it must be done, but it has also been proven to shorten the duration of a cold. I have tried it and, although it helped some, it didn't work as well as the two remedies I listed above.
If this is the 3rd or 4th day of your cold, and you already have a full-blown case, perhaps an over-the-counter aid, such as Thera-flu or Dristan (pills) for cold and flu would be your best bet. Although it doesn't "cure" a cold, either, it sure helps to lessen the symtoms a little; just enough to get you through it. Ricola brand cough drops in the yellow bag seems to work pretty well for coughs. It tastes like peppermint-horehound candy. I like it okay; my mom used to give me horehound candy, but my daughter won't eat it.
I also highly recommend using a humidifier if your air is dry. This helps to loosen the mucous in your nose, bronchial tube, and lungs, so that you stay clearer. It also helpes to ease a bad cough.
And, of course, like any doctor will tell you, plenty of rest and fluids.
Good luck.

The only remedy for ridding oneself of a cold is to let it run its course. Drink lots of water to rid your body of the nasty germs causing the cold. Eat chicken noodle soup- legend has it that it is of help in treating a cold. To relieve or at least calm the symptoms, buy "NyQuil for day." If possible, get lots of rest. Hope you feel better!

Go to the doctor if you are having cold symptoms after 2-3 days. Take aspirin, drink plenty of fluids (including water and Vitamin C based juices like Orange, Grapefruit), and go to bed.
Get well soon.

colds are viral (meaning there is no cure or way to get rid of it) and they take about 7-14 days for it to run it's course.
you can help alleviate the symptoms by following these steps.
-take dayquil during your awake hours to help dry up your nose and quiet your cough so you can do your normal daily activities
-take nyquil at night to help you sleep
-put a warm mist humidifier in your room while you sleep. this will help keep your nose and throat from drying out and will also help loosen any chest congestion you might have.
-suck on ice or hard candies to soothe a sore throat
-drink warm tea for sore throat
-make sure to drink plenty of fluids to help ward off dehydration
