i borrowed one of the series from the library and was disappointed that none of them started with the lyrics...just with the tune.

did the earlier series not feature the lyrics..was it only later that lyrics were played as well as the music?

The lyrics to the song are on the very first pilot episode, and the movie, thats all. M.A.S.H. had to take them out after the pilot or change the song because of the content. Hope I helped.

I agree check out the Manic Street Preachers version, it's fabulous.

MASH features the song "Suicide is Painless", with music by Johnny Mandel and lyrics by Mike Altman, the director's 14-year-old son. Ten years after the film's release, the song reached number one in the UK charts. The television show used an instrumental version as its theme tune.

No, the words were written to the tune, but never used on the show they were just a way of a group making money from the regular appearance of the tune in the series being good publicity for the song.
