I have been diagnose with policystic ovarian syndrome. My major side affects are weight gain and excessive hair growth aswell as depression. I'm pretty much over the depression side of it but I still feel extremely low and imbarassed and won't even let my husband touch me or see me naked.
Any ideas how I can lose weight and start feeling better about myself.
I go to the gym 3 times a week and do a cardio workout and also swim twice a week. I play squash for 2 hours every tuesday night. What else can I do except starve myself?

I don't know your husband, but if the same happened to my wife I wouldn't give a damn about what you looked like as long as you were healthy and happy, it would hurt more to think that she was hiding herself from me.

I am sure that you are probably far more concerned about it than the reality of how you look, which distorts your self-image.

I bet you look fantastic!

My wife was suspected of having PCOS, and one of the possible treatments discussed was metformin which is normally used to treat type 2 diabetes.

There is current research showing that the same gene that causes diabetes may also cause PCOS, and this is promising for future treatments.

Several studies have recorded the use of Metformin in women
with PCOS. Metformin is effective in reducing testosterone
levels and in making the menstrual cycle more regular. While
Metformin starts to improve the prospects for fertility in few
weeks, a reduction in unwanted hair growth would be expected
to take some months and be slower than conventional treatment.
Women can find weight loss easier when taking Metformin even
though it is not a traditional weight reducing agent.

For a more instant way to deal with the hair growth, you should speak to a beautician about waxing (which might be difficult with the thicker hair), or laser hair removal (which is very effective even for men).

Hope this helps you.

All the best,
J.

I reckon that your weight is proper bringing you down right, well i think you are doing enough excersise however, if your not eating the right things it wont make any difference. obvioulsy your not losing weight normally cause of your syndrome but maybe you could go to the doctors and see if there is an alternative remedy that you can use. If not, i think you should see a therapist, not saying your mad or anything, but it might make you feel better about your self and bring up your self-esteem and prevent insecurities. In fact, i know it will do that so i recomend to see a professional and you will start to feel better about your self.

Tell your husband how you feel, maybe he might understand you a bit better and then that willmake you feel better so you might start to feel comfortable around him naked. he obvioulsy loves you so why not take the risk, what is there to be scared of, fear is pathetic when you face it head on.

i wish you all the best with everything and takecare. x

Try reading this book! "Heal your weight - stop digging your grave with your knife and fork" by Judy Cole. I lost three stone by following her advice.

I seem to remember reading somewhere something about the cause of policystic ovarian syndrome is a lack of vitamin K?

I know how hard it is to loose weight if you suffer with PCOS, but you are doing all the right things - you just have to work alot harder than other people.
I've known alot of people with PCOS to loose weight with weightwatchers, and many of them post on the community forum at: http://www.weightwatchers.co.uk/community/mbd/index.aspx
If you post there, you might find someone who can help more - I believe there are numerous msn groups running about dieting and pcos.
Your doctor can also advise further on dieting, and in some areas doctors can refer you to weightwatchers meetings so you don't have to pay - if that is something that might interest you.
Well done on all the exercise you are doing, and I'm sorry that it is hard for you to loose weight.
And don't forget to be kind to yourself - a haircut or some new clothes can really help us feel better.
Hope this helps :)

Try eating 5-6 small meals a day. it helps. a LOT. I lost 10 lbs in just a few weeks this way. Do NOT skip breakfast, cut out fast food, soda, etc.
