I run windows 98se. I have been trying to defrag but every time I go to do it after half hour to an hour it just freezes. I have cleaned all junk out and stopped all programs running in the background so I know shes ready to go. The mouse moves but it just wont click or select anything. So I then try Alt Ctrl Del and it comes up with a blue screen saying your system is busy or is unstable. Press any key to continue. When I do that it just goes to a black screen. So I Alt Ctrl Del but that dosnt work either. I have tried this about 5 times now. It cant be good for the computer to be turning it off at the power button all the time. The Computer runs fine otherwise I just cant get it to defrag and its in terrible need of one. I have used both the Windows defrag that is installed in programs Accessiories plus Diskeeper 7 a trial version but still wont work under either program Can someone please help or give me some idea on what I can do to fix it.

Few things it could be, most likely its either one) your defrag program is corrupted and you need a new copy of it, which you can find by googling the file name of defrag I think its defrag.exe or another possible reason is that you have some bad sectors that lock up the defrag process that need to be fixed. In that case go to my computer and right click the drive your trying to defrag and go to properties. In there, there should be a tab for running a scandisk, with scandisk run a thorough option and see if it comes back with any errors, and see if they were corrected. If the errors couldn't be corrected your hard drive is probably damaged or going bad..

upgrade the operating system if you can....windows 98 is obsolete and riddled with problems....barring that, run a disc cleanup, then run a scandisc before windows loads....you can do this by pressing f8 during bootup and select to start with dos prompt then run scandisk...then reboot...then turn off any and all programs....then run defrag and let it run...it may take 3 or 4 hours or possibly longer depending on the last time you defragged and the size of the drive....you may not see any progress for awhille but just let it run the course....when its completed reboot again.

I have the same thing and the exact same thing happens to me. I think we do need to upgrade. But, I just leave it alone for awhile and go back and try again and eventually it does defrag. This may even take a few days. Not the defrag, getting it to. I just keep trying untill it eventually does.
