i have read from people who say they do... that plants make a conscious choice to turn and face the sun, or else they would die... that some form of consciousness exists in every living thing.

but i am not sure.

how about algae? slime molds? bacteria? viruses? insects? sponges?

No, they do not make conscious decisions.

The ability to turn towards sunlight is called heliotropism. It's not a conscious act, but rather a reflex caused by exposure to certain kinds of light. A reflex is a natural action that cannot be controlled by thought. Can you stop your leg from jumping when the doc taps your knee with a rubber hammer? Can you stop yourself from blinking when you sneeze? Same thing. Hope this helps!!

Blessings

They do not chose to face the sun, a plant has never got fed up with life and make a conscious decision to face away from the sun and whither away.

A good starting point for consciousness would be a brain, which plants, algae, slime, bacteria, viruses and sponges don't have.

I wouldn't like to comment on insects, although I very much doubt they have any sense of self awareness and are little more than tiny robots in their thought processes.

no they have no consciousness - a plant moves to face the sun because of the stimuli - the sun hits a leaf, a signal is sent down the step and causes one part but not the other part of the stem to grow - that causes the plant to bend
all living things respond to stimuli and can act accordingly but they are not conscious

Not consciousness as you and me would recognize it, not even the consciousness of a bug, but something on a very low, low slow level
