I bought a scroll for my wife's birthday last year to go along with the Chinese novels she's readin - The Story of the Stone.

I would suggest finding an international student at your local university who knows Chinese (is from China). If the scroll is really old, there may be some differences (not sure) in lettering from then and now, but this still may be your easiest option . . .

. . . or find the prof at the University who TEACHES Chinese.

You could take a picture of it and send it to me. But I don't know if I could do a good job. I might be able to tell you whether it's old Chinese or modern. Old Chinese is really really hard to read/understand/everything though, even for native speakers.
