Do you know I was just looking at this yesterday! I was amazed how many famous dwarfs played Ewoks in the Return of the Jedi. Go to Wikipedia and search under famous dwarf actors. It's an easy way to spend an hour - so many of them committed suicide or went bankrupt and ended up in drugs and only a few of them are still going.
Apparently it's under 5' for men and under 4'7 for women to be considered a "little person". Phew. I'm 4'11 and a half and so technically NOT a dwarf. PS I am the same height as Kylie Minogue!

Dwarfism isn't based entirely on height. While they are shorter than the average adult, dwarfs and midgets have different defining physical features that makes them one or the other. Both dwarfs and midgets are defined as 'unusually short' people by Webster's. Midgets are perfectly proportioned little people, where dwarfs, on the other hand, are small in physical stature, but are also not proportioned properly. Most often they have a larger than usual head, short stock bodies, short, muscular legs and arms and big hands. Their body isn't a miniature 'big' person, their body proportions are abnormal and misshapen. It's those features, combined with being short, that get a person classified as a dwarf.

Dwarfism is typically a pathological condition in which the physical size of a person, animal, or plant is well below normal.
Persons who are simply very short in the absence of pathology (short people born into a short family, for example) are not usually referred to as dwarfs. The human definition of dwarfism is a medical or genetic condition that usually results in an adult height of 4'10" (147 cm) or shorter for men and 4' 7" (139 cm) or shorter for women.
As populations get taller - in some cases a person with a dwarfing condition may be slightly taller than that. In the 19th century, midget was a medical term referring to an extremely short but normally-proportioned person and was used in contrast to dwarf, which denoted disproportionate shortness.
Modern terminology designates the two descriptions now by proportionate dwarfism vs. disproportionate dwarfism (such as achondroplasia - is a type of genetic disorder that is a common cause of dwarfism). Proportionate dwarfism is often the result of a hormonal deficiency (such as human growth hormone), and it may be treated medically.

If you watch the Snow White (2001) movie, then about 6 ft 6 inches is about right.
Vincent Schiavelli played Wednesday (the yellow dwarf).
