Is he sleepy? Or is he awake and not latching on? Is he trying and not succeeding (seems uncoordinated) or will he not even try to latch on? Was he latching in the hospital?

Good for you for using the spoon to get milk into him instead of a bottle. Hopefully this will help to keep him from getting more confused about how to latch on. Plus, he needs some calories to be able to wake up and try to nurse. The spoon, a medicine dropper or a medicine syringe are good options to get a few drops of expressed milk into him.

If he is not waking up to feed, try undressing him and wiping him with a cool cloth. Change his diaper, move his arms and legs around to simulate him.

Tell him to "open wide" and then open your own mouth really wide to show him. (Sounds silly, but sometimes even very small babies will mimic you like this.) If he is not opening up wide enough, you can take your finger and pull down firmly on his chin to help get his mouth open wide enough.

The cross-cradle hold and the football hold are good for you to try to control his head and help him get latched on. You can help guide him and pull him in to the breast this way.

It might help to have Dad or someone else stand behind you and drip a little expressed milk into the corner of his mouth to help interest him in latching on.

I strongly suggest that you call a La Leche League Leader or a Lactation Consultant for some help getting him latched on. With a very young baby who isn't latching, a LLL Leader may be willing to visit you at home to help you out. She will help you for FREE. You can also call your hospital and ask to speak to the LC there.

ETA:
A LC or a LLL Leader will be more help than a doctor. Also, keep in mind that some weight loss is normal in the first week. As long as it's under 10%, don't freak out. Baby should regain it by 2 weeks of age.

I am surprised you are already home! I think you should talk to a Dr NOW!!! My daughter was unable to suck and was in the hospital for a month. She ended up coming home on a feeding tube. That was scary. Please try and get this resolved. Have you tyred something called the nipple guard. It sits on your nipple. It is a lot bigger than your nipple but they suck that instead of your actual breast. They still get your breast milk though. It teaches them how to suck. Good luck!

Believe it or not, among babies' inborn reflexes is sucking. Talk to your doctor to resolve the situation. However, continue putting him on your breasts and let him suckle on his own. Try to tickle his tongue with your nipple (what my mom did to get our reflex), to get some reaction. As well, feed him as you're feeding him now to make sure he gets his nutrients. All the best.

You should see a doctor immediately. My babies were born not able to suck either. He will not get sufficient nutrition if he cannot suck. How were you released from the hospital if he can't suck? I was in the hospital for a week with both my babies until they were able to properly suck! Please go see your doctor today!

For a 4days old baby it is difficult to suck.So you can use the artificial nipples for sucking for a better grip, and also try to teach the baby as normal way ...after few days he will suck it normally.
