Try "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry. The story is set in Mumbai during the 'Emergency' in the mid-1970s . It may be a little more recent than what you're looking for, but still a good read.

I read a great novel of Romanian writer and scientist as well Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) - 'Maitreya'. A fantastic story about love of a European guy and Indian girl. It is very deep and full of ethnical details. I believe Eliade wrote some more wonderfull books.

Stories written by kalidasa like Shakunthalam, Meghadhootam are set around the Mauryan period. They are originally written in Sanskrit, but I am sure translations should be available.

The original novel may have had a different title. It's by Rudyard Kipling.
