Windows an already do it Start>All Programs>Accessories>Communications>Remote Desktop Connection (for versions Start>All Programs>Accessories>Remote Desktop Connection (for client 6)

Just start the program on the computer you're using and type in the LAN (or WAN) IP address of the computer you want to connect to, you can also use this feature away form home.

Just make sure the settings on the computer are set up to allow connections. Control Panel>System>Remote and Check the box below 'Remote Desktop'. (Allow users to connect remotely to this computer, if you want added security use the 'Select Remote Users' button to only allow certain computers.

The connection is pretty straight forward, when you're connected to the computer it will display a username and password text box, just use the Username and Password you use to login to the computer you're connecting to.

Note- A password must be assigned to the computer you're connecting to, Remote Desktop Connection won't allow you to connect to an IP without a password.

In windows you can try remote desktop.

But have a look at VNC software. There is RealVNC, TightVNC and UltraVNC.

if you are on a pure windows environment that is both server and client are windows I recommend UltraVNC it is free and allows you to do file transfers.

TightVNC is also very good and has versions for both linux and windows.
