It was Jimmy Hill. A linesman pulled a muscle and, in the days before fourth officials, no replacement was available. A tannoy announcement was made for a qualified referee but after five minutes or so no one volunteered. So Jimmy Hill made himself known, having taken a refereeing course when he was a player. Apparently the referee, Pat Partridge, said "you'll do. Jim. Get changed and make it quick".
