If you carry that many it is obvious you are circumventing the law. They allow ciggies for personal consumption tax free. Anything more than the limit, you pay the tax and you can bring it in. No probs. Just check with the UK customs about their tax rules on this.
You probably can make a few bucks even after you pay taxes. They have no problems with that. It is called import, my friend.
If you hide and bring it in somehow (called smuggling), you are in for free 6'x6' room and meals at gov. expense.

If you can fit that much in a personal vehicle you're actually legal. You'd only run into trouble if you were caught selling them or if you had an HGV load.
For many smokers that's only about a year's supply -- 50 cartons. Any solicitor with half a brain should be able to beat back any prosecution AND get your fags back to you.
