If you want to see this phenomenon up close and personal, join the Navy and volunteer for submarine duty or the Air Force and volunteer for missile crew duty. After 6 months under water, or a few days in a silo the only way to tell if it is day or night is by the clock, and even that can fool you as the clocks in those places are usually on GMT. From personal experience, I found that over several days, I would go to sleep when I was tired and wake when I had slept enough. The cycle seemed to be more than 24 hours long, so in a matter of days, I was sleeping during the day and waking up at night. A few days later, I was back to sleeping at night and being awake during the day.
