I have a installed a new drive to try and solve this, but it still keeps stopping half way through writing disks saying either I have "I/O error" or "device was ejected incorrectly".
Could this be a cable problem or somthing more serious?

It sounds to me like it is a cable problem. I doubt it is anything serious.

Yeah, check the cables and also make sure the drive is set to "master" on the pin out.
