Dec. 21 (winter solstice) is the shortest day of the year (in northern hemisphere). Days are getting longer now and will continue to do so until the summer solstice, June 21.

December 21st is the shortest day of the year. After that each day gradually gets longer. In the Spring you will set your clock ahead one hour (daylight savings time) and you will have those long days!

We start gaining day after Dec. 22 in northern hemisphere.
where as we start gaining day after june 21 every year in southern hemisphere.
these phenomena are called occurance of solstices.
winter solstice occur on dec.22 and summer solstice occur on june 21.
amount of dawn and dusk increases above tropic of cancer and capricorn.
length of the day and night increases to six months over poles.
on equinoxes the duration of day and night are same in both hemisphere.
