What exactly was the discovery made in the Original Star Trek movie?

They discovered that the Voyager satellite(?) encountered a race of thinking machines in it's travels. Since Voyager, or Vger as it was called, was attempting to reestablish contact with it's creator, the machine race sent it back in search of it's creator, i.e., Earthlings. The machine race, the memory of their creators lost in time, gifted Vger with the mammoth defense mechanism so it could carry out it's duty to return home and "join" with its creator. To humans it only amounted to passing information, but in the end the machines wanted more, they actually wanted to understand the human connection between creator and the created, to be more than machine. At the end of the movie, as you know, the machine/human probe and the officer did join, literally.
