I think you wanted information on nuclear disaster. Well, disasters are basically two types - natural and man-made (although many believe all disasters are man-made!). Nuclear disaster falls in the second category. Nuclear disaster occurs when the environment and its contents (be it human, animals, plants, soil, water, structures etc.) are exposed to radiation levels and duration that cause harm. Remember the Chernobyl accident in 1986? In all, over 130,000 people were affected! Prevention is a complicated and professional job. It involves proper use and maintenance of the nuclear installations, strict adherence to the safety procedures. If, as a lay person, you need to know more about disasters, you may try find out about UNEP's program called APELL (Awareness & Preparedness for Emergencies on a Local Level). Remember being prepared for disasters is half the battle won1

Chernobyl in Belarus was a good example of a real disaster. It was a poorly designed reactor with few safeguards. Modern made reactors have so many multiple redundancies that a true disaster is close to impossible. Given the type fuel most reactors use, the worst possible scenario is a melt down and that is planned for so as to make it nearly impossible too. Only a very few reactors are capable of exploding and they are being phased out for the most part.

A nuclear disaster would be the deployment of nuclear weapons in an attack on any nation on earth. A full scale nuclear war or world war III would result in the destruction of the world as we know it. Aside from the initial destruction and lives lost, there would be radiation poisoning, the poisoning of food and water, and nuclear winter, followed by the destruction of all life forms on earth.
