Chernobyl in Belarus was a good example of a real disaster. It was a poorly designed reactor with few safeguards. Modern made reactors have so many multiple redundancies that a true disaster is close to impossible. Given the type fuel most reactors use, the worst possible scenario is a melt down and that is planned for so as to make it nearly impossible too. Only a very few reactors are capable of exploding and they are being phased out for the most part.

A full scale nuclear war or world war III would result in the destruction of the world as we know it.
