It is impossible to get enough volunteers to do all the work that needs to be done at a place like a large humane society so they have to have some paid workers.
Many people volunteer time but it is to hard to find enough who can do all the work needed. Sometimes you have to pay someone.
I do volunteer work with a rescue and foster work and home visits and other things. I also will do a training class for about 4 weeks that if you want to attend the class you make a donation to the rescue and you get to attend. I love that I have the time to volunteer. I fell good helping someone else with a their pets.

I hate to burst your bubble here, but aside from county funded shelters, I have never dealt with ONE single rescue that paid it's volunteers. And the county shelters generally pay very poorly. But most people can't volunteer for them for 40 hours a week. If they didn't pay staff, they couldn't remain open.

It goes both ways. The county run animal shelters allow so much full time work and that is it because of budget allotments. The rest of the work is voluntary.
In Alabama, I have "heard" that they charge $40 to take animals in, which is totally absurd. And they charge $100 to adopt them out. I can understand the adoption fee, but as far as the intake fee? It's preposterous. They are suppose to be in animal rescue because they are trying to save animals lives. To me, the intake charge is quite discouraging. This encourages abandonment and animal starvation.

Getting enough volunteers is very difficult bcaues we all have lives of our own. I know how hard it is to find time to volunteer myself. How can you expect people to drop important facts of life, like earning a living and taking care of their families to work in an animal shelter?
How much time have you volunteered lately?

It is not wrong at all if the shelter has the money. But many shelters are already struggeling to finance the vet and to get the money for food.

I completely consider you, and animalgurl. some rescue individuals are incredibly reliable, people who actual take a little time to be taught eveything they might approximately what they are doing. I hate whilst human beings say, "oh i like animals" yet do no longer problem gaining information of something approximately them. in case you like some thing you desire to understand approximately it. Thats my opinion besides. yet because of the fact they artwork with canines or despite, some human beings think of their word is gospel. comparable with vets. i understand some rather ignorant vets, with foodstuff and breeds and that style of factor. A load of rescue workers are idiots. Shell P, then you definately've in no way had to coach something better than a Border Collie or a Labrador if thats all you had to apply! Ha! all people would desire to coach an incredible little working collie with "a pointy word and treats"! canines like Dobes and reliable GSD's (those Germans understand the thank you to make 'em) undertaking each and everything, annoyingly sufficient, and theres no factor pretending that they do no longer, because of the fact thats precisely what reasons injuries and given them a foul call. "Sharp words and treats" with out any real training. Shell P and all people else with this opinion, i'd incredibly desire to grant you a Yugoslavian Doberman, enable you "prepare" him and notice how he obeys you in a field whilst he see's a rabbit. Or smells one. you will desire to have a canines evidence experienced till you may now say its completely experienced, or perhaps then you definately do no longer take any opportunities. I mean Jeez, you don't get automobile with out understanding how tocontinual it! you will desire to no longer get a canines with out understanding the thank you to coach it! Prongs are needed for some canines, no longer all canines. E-collars are even needed for some canines, with an unreliable keep in mind as an occasion. you will thank God for figuring out to be taught the thank you to apply an e-collar on your canines that for the period of the previous had a choosy keep in mind whilst he gets off his lead in site visitors and notice's a cat, and yet comes right this moment back to you once you call. go Frankie!!! (And animalgurl and a few others!)
