I do think opposites attract. It can be an intense attraction in the beginning. It can be exciting to be with someone so unlike you, you are intrigued by them, drawn to them because they seem to complete you, to provide a balance to what you offer, but in my experience it's the differences that wind up pulling you apart. A relationship of true opposites would have to be short-lived I think. (At least mine have been.)
A couple may appear to be opposite in some superficial way (one is more sociable than the other for example) and complement each other, balancing out each other's differences but they must have some fundamental underlying common ground or they could not sustain a relationship (for example, attitudes on children -- whether they want any, religious beliefs, financial habits etc.) How could you build a life with someone nothing like you? How would you live together peacefully? It would be constant war. Unless you were both calm people williing to disagree (of course then this even temperament would be a similarity not a difference then).
My strongest relationships (romantic & platonic) are those where they are much like me. The things that you share in common are the bonds that hold you together. If you had no common interests, what would you do, what would you talk about? If you had no common personality traits, how would you understand each other, how would you get along? If your lifestyle choices were at odds, how could you build a future together?

In personal relationships, most of the time, not. If you do not have a basic core of values and priorities, the relationship is doomed for failure, be it friend or lover. While a certain number of traits..finding an outgoing character if you are not, work for a specific period of time, what you love about the person (either being out going or reserved) becomes the thing you may come to hate the most over a period of time because you are envious that you do not have that trait. Not what you wanted or expected to hear, but life is full of curve balls. Sorry!

immagine two rivers flowing one direction ,downstream
but magnets would be easier ,north flows to south and a north flowing to south flow the same way
but magnets can be reversed thus running as two rivers pushing against each other
then there is people
oppisites
as in a leader and a follower ,both oppisite to each other but then put the right circumstance and the joint action based on thier personalities have one to decide ,one to do ,a leader and a follower
they can change unlike magnets or streams of water
with people we have divergent skills ,one could lead for egsample in ocertain situations and the other in uncertain situations ,both having thier expertise they have /compliment each other.
its attraction of oppisites but also a means of survival or prospering.
