Yes, one has to take thyroid hormone tablets for life. There is no alternative. The thyroid gland is responsible for controlling the body metabolism; if you dont take the hormone then one has a tendency to gain a lot of weight.

It depends on the cause of the thyroid problem and whether you are dealing with an underactive or overactive thyroid. Thyroid problemscan be caused by a problem with the thyrroid itself or by a problem in the pituitary gland (the gland that produces the hormones that control the thyroid). In some cases it is possible to use radioactive iodine to damage a small portion of the thyroid so that it produces less of the thyroid hormones (if you are hyperthyroid). There is also a possiblity of surgical resection of the thyroid. Some people may only need to increase the iodine content of their diet and yet others may require medications that are not hormonal in nature - rather aimed at the underlying cause of the thyroid symptoms.
The most important thing to note is that thyroid conditions have many possibile underlying aetiologies and many treatments. It is vitally important that you consult an endocrinologist to find the particular treatment that is apporpriate for your particular thyroid condition.

Most people do have to take medication for a thyroid irregularity for life. See an endocrinologist though to be sure you can't have surgery to correct your imbalance.
I have a friend who was able to stop taking synthroid because her thyroid after 25 years suddenly started working correctly. She still goes in for blood work to have the hormones monitored though.

Yes it is necessary to take thyroid hormone replacement pills for the rest of your life.
the thyroid controls your metabolism, and internal temperature.
I have a friend who eats a 600 calorie diet (when the average is 2000-2200 calories a day, and she still continues to gain weight.
