They can certainly be written up for unprofessional conduct. The best way is to write an email to that person saying that you do not appreciate the gossip about yourself and asking the person to please refrain from trying to gossip to you about others. Then tell the person that if it continues, you will have her brought up on harrassment as it will be considered on purpose from this moment forward but that she has the benefit of the doubt until today. Remind the person that you are there to earn money to take care of your family and your bills, not to make friends. You are not here to have a high school environment and do not wish to be surrounded by catty women. Write at the bottom that you do not want to discuss this email with her as it is pretty self explanatory but that if she is upset about this email to think of how upsetting it is to you to have your name thrown around the office in the gossip and to remind her that atleast you are addressing her privately about it.
After writing the email at some point, go to your bosses office and make him aware of the steps you are taking to put an end to the gossip. If this girl retaliates, your boss will already be aware of the situation.

Oh most definitely and not only that the person could end up on the end of one serious law suit that they have to pay. Its called defamation and the employer is also vicariously liable for that employee. A lot of silly people act this way and when they get the subpoena they go "oh what have I done". No this is harassment and the person should be put in place immediately without fear or favor.

Gossip is pretty much everywhere, and it's typically not harrassment. I would just say totally remove yourself and keep to yourself. Don't engage in any talk, do your job to the best of your ability and keep at it. Secretly email your manager or supervisor and tell her how you feel it's affecting your work, if it gets worse.
