I'm a children's book editor.

Here are some tips and links to articles you might find helpful, to add to what you've already read:

Work on your writing, as others have suggested. And you have to read, and read what children are reading today.

First thing you need to do is join the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. http://www.scbwi.org/ Then go to one of their conferences. Meet other writers. Get your manuscript critiqued.

Here are some basic tips, from an article I wrote: http://www.underdown.org/basics.htm .

You don't need an agent. Many people get started without one. More on agents for children's book authors: http://www.underdown.org/agents.htm .

In children's books, you can still contact some publishers directly, but don't do that until you are sure you're ready to do so. Here's an article with some tips: Getting Out of the Slush Pile, at http://www.underdown.org/slush.htm .

Get some good books on writing. Here's a list from my site: http://www.underdown.org/books-about-writing.htm .

That should get you started. My web site has many other articles, so please stop by and browse.

I write for travel & other magazines and I always have at least two or three people read everything I write before submitting it in order to check for grammatical errors as well as errors of fact. No matter how knowledgable or well-educated you are, you will always miss something in your own work.

For a manuscript, go to any of several online sites, or to your local library and check the 2007 (or 2006) Writer's Market at your local library. The Writer's Market is usually maintained in the reference section and it contains the names of publishers, the types manuscripts each is looking for, guidelines, etc.

Never visit a publisher without an appointment.

Run a search for Book Publishers in your Internet. Enquire from them how you should proceed from there. Most of them require that you should be represented by an agent, but they mostly understand too if you as a novice author don't have an agent yet. You could also search for Publishing Agents or Editors.

An agent is your best bet. They know the publishers and what they're looking for and they'll help you negotiate your way through publishing. Publishers are also in general more likely to look at an author that is represented than one who isn't.

being taken on by an agent is almost a guarantee of being published, but be prepared for the long haul. remember Col. Sanders went to a lot of restaurants before he found someone to take his chicken recipe!
Self publishing is an option, and marketing it yourself.
Get a blog going along the storyline...generate interest in the story that you can take to an agent to show you already have a readership.
good luck
