Probably the funniest film I've ever seen. I must have watched it over a hundred times now (I'm not exaggerating) and there are still bits of it that can reduce me to tears. Jesus on the mount, the stoning, the haggling scene, the running gag about Pontius Pilate's speech impediment, the immortal line, "he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy", and much more. It is pure comic genius.
As for causing offence, it's worth remembering the film was released in 1979 and as such was still considered controversial. Knocking Christianity was still, to an extent, taboo.at that time. It was banned in several countries and even in certain counties in England. This would be resolved by virtue of organised coach trips to a neighbouring county that was screening the film.

Watched it for the umpteenth time, and it is still as funny as ever.

I saw the replay of the discussion with Malcolm Muggerage, some bishop, John Cleese and Micheal Palin. The anti Brian side made themselves look completely ridiculous, and I think Monty Python did a sketch where they switched the argument so the fanatics where defending Brian against the heresy of Jesus.

I would count myself as religious, but I don't understand why some take such offence. Jesus's first 'miracle' was to change water into wine. Sounds like someone who liked his ale and is up for a laugh to me.

Funny? Oh yes! Offend, certainly not!! Remember this film pre-dates all the PC rubbish which people put up with nowadays. This film is comedy and that is the context it should be judged in. What makes comedy funny is poking fun and if you watch the film it is a parody of all people and all nations.

Some funny lines, but on the whole, not a funny film. I think its what is known as a jump on the band wagon film. Everyone says its great so you feel you have to agree.

A brilliant film.

Why is it religious people can't take a joke? the seem to lose their sense of humour the very second they start going to the Church or Mosque, etc.

The biggest problem we face in the world is the 'intollerance' by many religious people to anything that makes fun or challenges something they belive in.

If they would see films and programmes such as this as just funny, or even getting them to question certain areas of their beliefs the world would be a much safer place.

Yes I loved it, and because I would class myself as an atheist it didn't offend me. I think religions should be looked at, and questioned through comedy, but to stop it becoming too offensive it is always easiest if the person doing the ridicule is of that religion and fully understands all of it, the good and bad parts!

I don't see how it can be classed as offensive by anyone. If you take it for what it is - a seriously funny film, as well as a work of fiction - it shouldn't cause any offense whatsoever. but the God Squad do have an annoying tendency to take things to literally somethimes.

Yes it was one of the best comedies I've ever seen. If you liked that keep your eye out for Monty Pythons Holy Grail. It's just as funny if not funnier!

It is a very funny film but I did think it was very brave of them to have made it. Apparently it was banned in Scotland when it came out.
