Maria Curie was a Polish scientist who lived in France. She and her husband worked to-gether as chemists. She inadvertently discovered radium, a radio active substance which she found would help the fight against cancer. She worked with radio-active materials for many years, ignorant to the fact that they emit ed a death producing product. Consequently she developed cancer herself and died in 1934 at the age of 77years. There is now in existence a charity in her name to raise money for more research into cancer.
