Has anybody heard anything about the new studies on ultrasounds? Saying they can cause some sort of deformation of the skull or brain damage or something? I'm really curious, I've already had 2 and I'm 14 weeks and due for another in 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone for answering my question. I heard it from one of my friends and it scared me a little. I am high risk..I have had hypertention with previous pregnancies and I have gallbadder disease. I just wanted to know if it was mainly false or if others had heard it as a fact too.

they 'dont know'
they think extended use could cause problems, but they 'dont know'
as far as i know, there is no proof either way (just like cell phones causing brain cancer), but as far as i know, with a trained medical professional there is probably no danger
(i know they were getting all pissy because tom cruise bought one to use at home, and in the hands of tom cruise, no i wouldnt consider them safe)

I don't think it's quite true to say that ultrasounds are definitely 100% safe in all circumstances because there isn't conculsive scientific evidence either way, but they are very widely used in almost all pregnancies now and the vast majority of babies come out just fine.
It's really a case of weighing up risks and benefits. Is there a good reason why you have had so many ultrasounds already? 3 by 16 weeks is not standard. If you are worried you might want to question the need for so many ultrasounds. I will only be having 2 in my whole pregnancy, which is pretty standard practice in the UK. I considered the benefits of knowing whether my baby was ok to outweigh any risks, but I wouldn't have any more now the main 20 week scan is over.

I have heard this before too, but I have also heard that there is virtually no risk when the procedure is carried out by a professional. The fear of this came about when Tom Cruise bought an ultrasound machine for Katie Holmes so they could look at the baby whenever they wanted to for non-medical reasons. The medical community was up in arms over this, fearing that everyone would want to do the same thing. If someone had a machine at home and was constantly doing ultrasounds without knowing what they are doing, then there could be some growth issues, seeing as many fetuses dislike the sound waves emitted by an ultrasound. But if ultrasounds are done by a professional for diagnostic reasons, there is no risk.

I had several as I had high blood pressure and they wanted to monitor the foetus. My son (18mths) had colic as a newborn but now seems perfectly healthy. But the fact remains that no one really knows what (if any) side-effects of ultrasound use are.

Presumably your pregnancy is high-risk though to have had two by wk14? If you are worried then ask what the risk to your baby is if you don't have to scan and make a decision based on this information as to whether to limit the number you have or not.

one study showed that it led to a change in the area of the brain that determines if your left or right handed, especially in males.
one thing i noticed is that areas of the ocean where they use a lot of ultrasounds there is a drastic decrease in the creature population. even the whales tend to move out. yet they are supposed to be safe and baby cant hear them or feel them...but fish do
