what is the trick to keeping beta fish alive?....I never over fed, water was room temp..68/69 degrees F.?

used water conditioner, it lived fine for 3 weeks today i found it dead...i used regular beta food,,any body know about betas and what it takes to keep em alive?

They need a tank of at least 2.5 gallons with a filter and a heater to keep the temp around 78-82 degrees. With a filter you only have to do partial water changes around once a week instead of complete water changes every other day. And you always have to use a water conditioner, the chlorine and chloramine (which doesn't evaporate) will burn the fishes gills and can kill it. If you keep them in a bigger tank like 10 gallons then you could even get a few cories to keep him company. They like lots of plants and maybe even a little cave to hide in too.

Betta's are tropical fish, theylike temps between 74-78 or so. Thbey need a heater, and a filter, and if you're keeping them in a tiny tank, which I do not reccommend, they need some sort of filtration.

I havehad two bettas and the 1st one I had for about 5-6 months and this one I have had for about the same time! I dont even use water conditioner, maybe it is the water in your area! Try using bottled distilled water and let it set for 24 hours before changing the bowl water, thats what I have been told at leat! Itsonly like 64 cents a gallon! I use water from the sink!

what kind of tank was it in??? maybe it was just. sick to begin with.. i have had bettas all my life they usually live for 5 years at a time... if they were healthy to begin with... it sounds to me that you had a unhealthy one to start with...
