Error 680 means No dial tone. Check if your cable is not faulty and that it is plugged in securely.
'This problem tends to occur between the modem and the phone line
Make sure your telephone line is connected to your modem. Insert one end of the telephone wire into the wall socket and the other end into the back of the modem. When connecting the telephone line to the back of the modem, select the socket marked "Line" or "Telco".
Unplug all other devices attached to the telephone line ( e.g. personal answering machine), and make sure your telephone receiver is on the hook.
If you have a call minder or answering service, check and clear your new messages. This occurs because the call minder gives a series of [tomes] :-) to tell you you have new messages which can sometimes interfere with the modem dial tone
Run modem diagnostics which are available from the modem icon in the control panel to ensure your modem is responding
Restart your PC
Attempt dialling from your handset to the intended number excluding the 1470. If you cannot establish a connection this indicates a problem with your phone line. If it connects it indicates a problem with your PC or modem.
Reinstall the modem using the modem providers software'

680 suggests a line fault. Have you got Broadband filters on ALL the phone sockets, including ones used for sky boxes, answer machines &c, and are all the filters ok. Is your modem usb, and is it on its own port? usb modems draw a fair bit of current and if sharing with other devices can drop out unexpectedly. Sometimes a powered hub for the modem helps. I'm with demon, not tiscali and after start-up I have to wait a few seconds before I try to connect or else I get this 680 as the modem hasn't initialised

Go to start> all programmes >scroll up to sagem f@at800-840>dslmon (this is your modem connection) and click on ~ this will tell you your status >press reset and this will reconnect you to the Internet. I am a Tiscali customer and this seems to be a common problem with their modem, it disconnects when appearing idle. I hope this helps you, best of luck.
