The Academy Award (Oscar) is valued at $1.00 before any are awarded to the stars. What they are worth when a famous star has put it up for sale by auction is anyone's guess as not many of the Oscars awarded are not put up for auction.

There is something that springs to mind and I am currently checking it out, that says the Academy forbid the direct auction of the Oscar so as to preserve its uniqueness, and will buy the item themselves.

Additional: After looking at a press release on the site http://www.oscars.org it is said that Kevin Spacey was the anonymous bidder at an auction where an Oscar was sold. The original recipient was George Stoll and he was the composer in the film Anchors Aweigh - Full press release can be seen at the oscars.org site
