Sure. I also have felt it was an illusion.

It was a song in the late 70s. It has been performed by many artists. Leon Russell wrote it and first recorded it in early 1972. George Benson reworked it and released it in 1976.

George Benson made it a hit song. The first song ever top hit number one on the Billboard Pop, R&B, and Jazz charts in 1976. George Benson won a Grammy for it in 1977.

George Benson, Leon Russell

Are we really happy with this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in this masquerade

Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reason why
we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

We could just start over
but it's oh so hard to do
When you're lost in a masquerade

The thought has crossed my weary mind at times. But I refuse to believe that is true.

Sometimes. Lots of things/people are not what they seem when you dig deeper, and other things remain a mystery.
