They tend to walk around wearing life jackets, you never know when you could get blown into the water when your walking down the main street of Auckland.

New Zealand is the size of an entire country.
Lots of people live in studio apartments on the fourty-sixth floor of a steel & glass building. The windows don't even open. They don't own a car. Life is neat and cozy.
You can live in a place surrounded by a lot of land and still be in the middle of nowhere. Or, you can live in the middle of a big city and have no money - which IS being nowhere.
Its not the geography you need to fear - Its the being alone that eats you up and spits you out. If you let it.

hey mate. i am from new zealand, and i reckon it isn't really small as. i must say living here isn't that bad, despite being isolated geographically. this country has heaps of spectacular places, particularly in the south island. and yeah, since nz is surrounded by massive bodies of water, every place here can have easy access to beaches, which are usually uncrowded, compared to, say, when you live in nebraska, oklahoma, kansas, those states lol.
cosidering the social aspect of it though, as long as all your mates and rellies are here, you should be fine. some of my rellies and best buds are all overseas, so i'm clouded over by the blue funk. that's the downside of it. but i suppose that's a reality of life that every person, who travels or works in a different country, experiences.

If that's all you know then it's your "normal".
They could ask how you could live in such a large area with no water nearby.
